International Student Advisor Roundtable

February 16-18, 2006
The College of Wooster
Wooster, Ohio

International Student Advisors from 25 liberal arts colleges and 11 states braved the weather and traveled to The College of Wooster (Ohio) in February. "Only a few of us had met before, but it took very little time gathered around the hearth to discover our common mission - supporting undergraduate international students in the USA" said Karen Edwards, director of international student affairs at Wooster and co-coordinator of the roundtable.

The kick off event included a public lecture by June Noronha, Strategic Planning Officer for the Bush Foundation and former President of NAFSA: Association of International Educators. Her lecture, International Education and the Liberal Arts: An Inextricable Alliance, carried the voice of international students and their advisors to the podium - reminding our audience of the unique issues these constituents face within a liberal arts institution. Leslie Youssef and Jon D. Fishbane, of Roetzel & Andress, LPA, also met with the group, to reflect on the unique legal issues facing advisors at private schools.

The most valuable outcome of the meeting included open and interactive conversations; sharing data and best practices regarding how we support international students; and brainstorming goals for future collaboration. "Most small school advisors work in isolation. If we work together, we can be more effective in supporting our students and in offering a united voice to promote international education as central to the liberal arts mission" the organizers from Denison, Oberlin, and Wooster reflected on their rationale for this gathering.
